Kentucky Derby 2009

Today was the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the legendary Triple Crown of horse racing.

We donned our best chapeaux and meandered down to the River Bistro to watch the action and enjoy a mint julep. As luck would have it I chose the winning horse, "Mine That Bird" (you guessed it, I pulled his name from a hat!) What a great race it was. A wonderful come-from-behind, on the rail win by 7 lengths and the track was sloppy. The jockey couldn't stop smiling he was so proud of his horse. It was drinks all around with our winnings.

As always is the case on Derby Day at Carl's River Bistro, there were lots of race fans in attendance and many were attired in their Sunday-best hats. As you can see below, our friend Hilary, on the right below, and her friend Joyce, look especially fetching. Hilary was the epitome of resourcefulness : she used the spring wreath from her front door!
